Routine Oral Exams & Teeth Cleaning

A twice-yearly preventive appointment is essential for maintaining your oral health. At your appointment, one of our hygienists will examine your mouth, scrape away plaque and tartar, buff and polish your teeth, and floss to remove any remaining debris. Then, Dr. Engram will perform a comprehensive oral exam, and look for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues. X-rays may also be recommended every year or two to check for any hidden issues. By getting your teeth checked twice every year, you can avoid cavities, gum disease, and other common oral health problems.

Scaling & Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)

From improper brushing and flossing habits to simple genetics, gum disease can develop for a number of reasons. No matter the cause, you shouldn't be deterred from receiving treatment. Gum disease and periodontal disease are infections and inflammation of the gums caused by plaque and tartar buildup between your teeth. In this case, a deep cleaning (scaling & root planing) is used to maintain or restore your oral health. This involves scraping plaque away from between your teeth and gums, and smoothing out the roots of your teeth to eliminate pockets of bacteria.

Oral Cancer Screenings & Biopsies

As part of your routine exam, we use an intraoral camera to look for lesions, discolored patches, and other abnormalities that may be indicators of oral cancer. If we notice a potential issue, we can take a biopsy and have it examined to determine if it’s benign or if further testing and treatment is required. Abnormalities and oral cancer are rare, but it's a preventive measure that offers patients peace of mind.

How Can Proper Nutrition improve Your Dental Health?

Proper nutrition is at the center of preventive care. Behind brushing twice a day and flossing once a day, it’s the best way to keep your smile healthy. By minimizing your consumption of sugar and simple starches and eating a diet that’s full of whole grains, fibrous vegetables, and other healthy foods, you can help prevent cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues that are caused by excessive sugar consumption.
