Prioritizing Values-Centric Dentistry Over Evidence-Based Dentistry

Values-Centric Dentistry: Why It Matters More Than Ever

Never make your Instagram scroll the first thing you do when you wake up.

I know this bit of wisdom, but one day I did it anyway. At the top of my inbox was a note from a colleague that read:

"I am not into holistic dentistry. I am an evidence-based dentist. Please do not contact me again."

As a well-mannered southern girl, I refrained from responding with sarcasm. Instead, I vented to my readers (that’s you!) and made a vow to change the world. Okay, maybe that’s a bit dramatic. But I knew this interaction revealed a bigger issue worth discussing.

The Clash Between Evidence-Based and Holistic Dentistry

The comment irked me not because of the "do not contact me" part, but because of what it implied — that holistic dentistry and evidence-based dentistry are incompatible. That being holistic means rejecting science.

Spoiler alert: It doesn’t.

To understand the issue, let’s look at the definition of evidence-based dentistry. At its core, it’s supposed to be a blend of:

  1. The best available research.
  2. The dentist's clinical experience.
  3. The patient's needs and preferences.

That sounds great, right? But too often, I see evidence-based dentistry turn into something else entirely. In some cases, it becomes:

  • A badge of superiority or infallibility.
  • Justification for clinging to outdated methods because newer research isn’t widely accepted yet.
  • An excuse to abandon natural or traditional approaches in favor of the latest, most publicized trends.

Enter Values-Centric Dentistry

Now, I’m not suggesting we abandon evidence-based dentistry. But I propose we prioritize Values-Centric Dentistry.

Values-centric dentistry doesn’t reject science. Instead, it ensures that our decisions are guided by core values that align with both the practitioner and the patient.

It can be holistic, biological, biomimetic, functional, or evidence-based — as long as it reflects shared values.

What Are the Core Values of Values-Centric Dentistry?

Here are the guiding principles I live by in my practice:

  1. First, do no harm.
  2. Less dentistry is often (but not always) the best dentistry.
  3. Informed consent is non-negotiable.
  4. We treat whole people, not just teeth.
  5. Patient autonomy and medical freedom are essential.
  6. Dental workplaces must be safe (yes, mercury exposure, I’m talking about you).
  7. Oral health is deeply connected to systemic health.
  8. Our bodies are designed to heal and flourish.

Why This Matters to You

When you visit a dentist, you deserve to know that your care is about more than just fixing teeth. Your values should shape the care you receive. Whether you prefer to avoid unnecessary procedures, choose natural treatments, or simply want a dentist who listens and respects your choices — it matters.

At our practice, we believe your health decisions should be a partnership. We take the time to understand what’s important to you, ensuring that every recommendation aligns with your goals and beliefs.

If this resonates with you, we’d love to meet you and be part of your journey to better oral health. And if it doesn’t? That’s okay too. Your values deserve to be honored, even if it means finding a different practice that’s a better fit.
