Fluoride and IQ: Report From National Toxicology Program

Emerging research acknowledges fluoride in drinking water is indeed linked to lower IQ in children.  This report by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) was suppressed, then ridiculed, then peer-reviewed with a fine-tooth comb, then finally forced to be released by the judge in a lawsuit against the EPA.

Visit https://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/go/mgraph08abs for the full report.

I want to be very clear.

Most of the headlines you see imply that this IQ impact only happens in places where fluoride is “twice the US recommended level.”  This is highly misleading.

The NTP stated that “...our assessment considers fluoride exposures from all sources, not just water…”

“We have no basis on which to state that our findings are not relevant to some children or pregnant people in the United States…”

“Several of the highest quality studies showing lower IQs in children were done in optimally fluoridated (0.7 mg/L) areas…many urinary fluoride measurements exceed those that would be expected from consuming water that contains fluoride at 1.5 mg/L.”

We don’t know what a safe level of fluoride is to protect children from neurological damage.

Here are some things you can do:

  1. Use reverse osmosis to filter fluoride out of your drinking water
  2. Get involved!  Ask your city/municipal water board to end water fluoridation.
  3. Decline fluoride at your dental visits.
